THE A. AND P. SHOW.

FIFTEENTH ANNUAL GATHERING. NUMEROUS ATTENDANCE OF VISITORS. GATE TAKINCS CONSTITUTE A RECORD, The outlook early yesterday morning for the fifteenth annual show of the Pahiatua Agricultural and Pastoral Association gave promise oil disappointing weather. Heavy showers of rain fell, and it seemed as if these would increase in intensity until, at nine o’clock, a watery sky suddenly gave way to sunshine which prevailed throughout the day. The attendance was very large. It constituted a record for the Association, as the gate takings totalled over £IOO, which is £2O in excess of previous years. The concourse included many visitors from the Wairarapa, Hawke’s Bay and Manawatu. The Association is fortunate in possessing several stalwart supporters, who were on the grounds at a very early hour, preparing for the day’s programme. Consequently, the various appointments were ready for the exhibits. Enthusiasm was manifest among the officials and they deseive much kudos. The President, Mr G. H. Brown, was most energetic, and acted in various capacities. He was complimented bv visitors upon the progress of the Association. The secretary, Mr J. A. Walsh, and his assistant, had an extremely, busy time, but were invariably equal to the many demands made upon their services. In the aggregate, the entries were not quite up to the standard of previous shows, but the quality on the whole was very good. The Jersey and dairv classes were the strong sections of the show. It is to be regretted that more breeders cannot be induced to compete, for there are undoubtedly many settlers who have stock that would fittingly adorn the show ring. The names of prominent dairymen who were represented in the past by numerous exhibits were noticeably absent from the catalogue on this occasion. No doubt the executive A\ill note this, and 01ganise a more extensive canvass prio r to the next gathering. The ring events, always a source of considerable entertainment lor the public, were handled expeditiously and some particularly good horsemanship was, shown, especially among the lady riders. The jumping and hunters’ competitions induced good fields. The principal the Open Hunters’ Competition, was won by Air AA . H. Oliver’s Gay Willie, the winner of the same event in 1922. The grand parade was effectively carried out, the stewards promptly marshalling the various stock and other prize winning, exhibits. The public signified their appreciation of the parade by a prolonged outburst of applause. The Municipal Band, which is now showing signs of renewed activity, enlivened the gathering with several tuneful selections. The local branch of the Plunket Society assumed control of luncheon and afternoon tea. served below the grandstand. The ladies worked exceedingly hard, and they were rewarded by liberal patronage. Ihe publican's "booth was under the management of Air F. G. 80-urke, while the refreshment stall was conducted by Air S. Tremaine. A large number of tickets was sold for the Association’s sheep and bullock weight guessing competitions, but the results will not be available until the end of the week. - :S "
