BUTTER DEALING
Under the heading “A Fair Deal for Butter,” the Napier Telegraph says :—XtTs stated, we do not know with what justification, that New Zealand butter Is finding its way to the United States and is “acquiring a reputation.” Searching Government statistics the only justification for any direct export of butter to the United States we can find is one entry of 87cwt. for a whole year. This is hardly worth considering. Yet some facts seem to show that for some reason our butter is thought highly of there. Perhaps there is an explanation. During last December considerable quantities ’of Australian butter were being* sold in the United States a.t 45 cents per pound, but, and this is tine point that concerns ins, it was being retailed in packets labelled “Special New Zealand.” It is described as “good butter,” so that perhaps our “reputation” is being made for us. This in the end may benefit this country. But another point 'remains to be noted. It turned out that each “pound” pat of alleged New Zealand butter was on an average over one ounce under weiglit. This-; while perhaps accounting for the low re tail price after paying duty and freight, is calculated to. give country a bad name. This is a matter as to which the Government niigjhit make inquiries, for among future possibilities must be set that - of exporting butter to the United • States. i
