LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A meeting will be held on Wednesday night for the purpose of forming a football club in Pahiatua. A Mas ter ton resident had three rows of parsnips and a spade stolen from his garden on Saturday night. A total of 198 head of stock, mostly sheep, were impounded by the Borough ranger during the past month. Of the Pahiatua liorough \s general and special rates, a sum of £136 18s 6d is still outstanding, and of the. special rates £lls 17s 9d. Owing to a counter-attraction there was a considerable deficit on the annual Horticultural Show, held' re. cently in Pahiatua, and it is stated that the committee will probably be called upon to personally contribute some financial assistance. The Otago Hospital Hoard wrote to the local .Borough Council asking for assistance in protesting against the .increased fe.es for auditing, the fees now being 9s per hour, or 3gns. per day of 7 hours, against £2 per day of 6 working hours previously charged. Referred to the Finance Committee. Cr. Morris asked the Mayor, at the meeting of the liorough Council last night, if he had iieard that a wild bullock had caused damage to the railing at one of the garden squares. The Mayor replied in the negative. ‘Some- councillors remarked it was purely an accident. Cr. Morris said lie had been requested by a ratepayer to mention the matter." The Mayor replied he would speak to the overseer on the subject. Evidence given by a lady at an inquest on a Christian Scientist whose life would have been prolonged bv medical aid—which she reluscd—showed that members of the faith may accept or decline such assistant.**?, as they individually think proper. “Supposing you had a femoral artery cut* in an accident,’ ’asked the coroner of the witness., “and you were in danger of bleeding to death, would you call in surgical aid?” “No” was would .prefer to bleed to death,” remarked the coroner interrogatively, the uncompromising reply. “You “1 should not bleed to death that is my faith,” was the con fide Tit response. So faith not only moves mountains, but ties up arteries.
