GERMAN SOCIALIST LEADER WAS VERY ILL IN PRISON. Dr. Karl Liebkrueoht, Socialist leader in the German Reichstag, who was arrested in connection with the May-day demonstrations in Deri in) in 1916, wtas liberated i n August by tli!e Germlan Government through fear that he might ’die in prison, says a despatch from Paris to New York. He is sa.id to be suffering from tuberculosis. He weighs only 84 pounds. The authenticity - of the aliova seems certain, says the Paris Temps' Geneva correspondent .although the German newspapers in obedience to oi'ders have ktpt silest regarding it. “The news,” says the oorrespondelnt, “was brought here by a Hollander, who has just arrived from Germany. He says the trades union organisations brought pressure on the Government for the release of Dr. Liobkn,eaht, who iis now in a private hospital and is not expected to j-e----oover, suffering, in addition to the Tung malady, from mentni depression, the result of inhuman treatment while in prison.”
Dr. Liebkneciht was tred ! y con tmartial in Beilin for “militay treason” and sentenced to four years and one month in prison and courtmart ai at Tlvorn also is said to have sentenced Dr. Liebknccht to fo«.r and o-lialf years at hard labour, charging that lie had attempted' to illicite the soldiers of the Thor : garrison to disobedience afid re bell m.
