DAMAGE IN SAMOA GROUP.
EARTHQUAKE & TIDAL WAVE.
Electric Telegraph-—Pre.'s Association. Auckland This Day. Particulars regarding the earthquake and tidal wave in the Samoa Group on June 25th show that there were long tremors extending over a period of two minutes. Building- wera violently shaken. 'Die customhouse, a concrete building, was considerably damaged. Residences and stores suffered, but to a less extent. Many subsidences occurred, one near the principal stores beipg about thirty teet square. The earthquake reached its maximum in the mountain* of tha interior. The ground was agitated like waves of the ocean. Area- of trees were uprooted and masses of rock were hulled down the mountain sides.
The quake was followed by a tidal wave, the fuM force of which was experienced on the side opposite to Apia and was severelv rieit on Alerpat* coast, and at Ldkrfaga. Savali and Pagopago The tide was dead low. but the sea swept over the beaoK into the adjacent native houses .-*rtying eveiything before it. The inhabitants fled terror-stricken to the hills. The Mormon church at Papaponga was demolished. The ware was almost spent on reaching Ha-ipai, but caused a lose of severa. cutters, aud flooded shops and dwellings
