HEADMASTER'S RESIDENCE.
THE BOARD’S PROPOSAL
For some weeks past there has been correspondence between the Pahiatua District High School Com- ( mittee and the Wellington Education Board respecting the question of a suitable residence for the recently appointed headmaster of the Pahiatua District High School (Mr G. W. ChJutwin). The Board now proposes to repair and renovate the old residence near the Presbyterian Church, at one time occupied by the late headmaster. Several members of the Comm it ns. consider , the proposal is an unwise one. as it will cost a considerable sum to put the building in repair alone. The chairman (Mr J, D. Wilson), who is an architect, in a letter to the Board, states that he quite recently examined the building and found the defects to be more serious than might, be noticed in a (visual bisection. The roof has been a source of trouble for years. There are several very bad leaks, and in hri opinion a large portion of the roof would require to be stripped and covered with new materials. Several of the piles examin'd were found to be' completely rotten. Evidence of the borer are also apparent, and the building is not. at present connected with the water and drainage systems .and other conveniences are lacking. He urges that it. is not good policy to attempt to make the building suitable as the headmaster’s residence, and recommends that he. fore anything further is done, the Board's Clerk of Works should make n thorough inspection of the building. M r W ilson is at present ne- ! gotiating to secure a piece of land adjoining the pr.-sont school site for n piece of about oqual area of the <tkt rite, and hopes to be able to submit a proposition to the Board.
