THE LIVERPOOL FUND

EFFORTS IN PAHIATUA

The {annual report ’of the local Committee of the Lady Liverpool Fund is an interesting one, disclosing considerable energy and a series of successful efforts on the part of the ladies. The report, which is signed by tiie Mayoress (Mrs J. D. C. Grtewe) and Mrs Tosswil 1 (lion. secretary), states that the first meeting was held on Bth August, 19T4, in response to a telegram received from the Countess of Liverpool, inviting cordial co-operation informing a Ladies’ Committee in Pahiatua for collecting funds and garments for the New Zealand soldiers. Subscription lists were opened and a sum of £153 was sent to Wellington. The Comniiitite)ei alfao provided, jerseys, tin laid a ras, socks, and handkerchiefs for the .soldiers from Pahiatua in the Main Expeditionary Force in Palmerston North. Cases of fruit, cakes, books and magazines were also sent, and in addition housewives, holdalls, socks, and Balaclavas were forwarded to Wellington. The Committee undertook the Belgian Relief Fund, a garden party being arranged, and . held on the 18th November, 1914, when the sum of £l3B Is 8d net was collected. The Committee next undertook the Belgian Christmas Gifit. Subscription lists wore opened, and the sum of about £4B was sent Mr Amos, seoretarv of the 'Fund in Wellington. On February 2nd, 1915, another mefjting’ wias held, when it was arranged to have collecting boxes at the IVdiiatua A. and P. Show in aid of the Trentham Base Hospital, a sum of £3O being collected to provide two beds. The Committee afterwards equipped three beds for urgent need when sickness broke out at Trentham. Ob 30th March another meeting was held, when it was arranged to send socks to the soldiers at the front. This resulted in over 200 pairs being sent. The next meeting was held on April 10th, and a Promenade Concert was arranged in aid of the Belgian Relief Fund, the sum of £2O Is 2d being raised. At a further meeting on M.\v 18th, it was arranged to have sowing meetings every other Tuesday to provide comforts for wounded soldiers, the money in hand to be spent in buying material for •same. A concert organised by Mr A. E. Hayden was held and resulted in a sum of £79 16s 6d being banded to the Fund. An appeal was made to help with the equipment of No. I. Hospital Bbip, and the Committee undertook to provide one dozen of each kind of article. This they did, besides providing a case of extra goods. They also provided 60 leather waistconsts for the soldiers at the front. The second Hospital Ship was then in view and tlie Committee equipped four bids. A special equipment was sent on account of the sinking of tile Marquette. In addition between 20 and 30 casre; of clothing have been packed and sen,t to the Belgians, also 30 kits for the Belgian babies. Cases of brinks and magazines have been sent to Trenth*mi. Extra eases containing some of every article necessary, hove been sent to St. John's Ambulance. .Liverpool Fund and Military Hospital Guild. Wellington. When an appeal came from Lord Liverpool to hold « “Red Cross" Day the Committee joined with the Red Cross Committee and had a successful gathering, £127 odd being sent to Wellington. The proceeds of « patriotic shop, £l6 16s 4d, wei'e sent to Wellington for the Soldiers' Club Room. At Christmas a case and two sacks, also ruses of f rtf it from Hastings, were sent to the Tauherenikau Camp for the soldiers’ Christmas dinner. On sth October, four cases, containing 360 parcels, were sent by the Transport, ,«nd in November two further cases were sent, containing 116 parcels. These were special Christmas gift parcel* for the soldiers at the front. Three balro of sandlrags have been sent by the transports containing 1076 bags, At a meeting, it was deoirhd to send era,tea of eggs to Wellington for distribution amongst the MiJitarV Hosplitals, and Mrs P.
