At Napier yesterday Sydney Nettlefold was fined fifty pounds for taking bets at tho Petane races.

No further light has boon thrown upon tho mystery surrounding the murder of Horatio Raraaden on Mount Eden (Auckland) on January 22nd. At the inquest held yesterday various witnesses testified to seeing or hearing the man run out of a clump of tr«vs where the deceased was found Stabbed to death. Tho Coroner said that at the present state of the enquiry there was only one possible find, ing, and that was that deceased was murdered by ••me person or persons unknown.. Nominations for the principal events at the Hukanui sports next month close with the secretary (Air X. Ranger) to-morrow. The Pahiatua, District High School Committee last evening, on the motion of Mr Findlay, passed a vote of thanks to the Pahiatua Swimming Club in appreciation of its efforts in encouraging the art of swimming among the children. It was mentioned that the headmaster had given practical encouragement to swimming .by awarding cash prizes to pupils for negotiating certain distances at the public baths.

A meeting of the Pahiatua Svnmming Club was held yesterday, ulien further arrangements were made tor the children’s swimming carnival to be held to-morrow afternoon. It was also decided to hold a concert in the King’s Theatre on Monday, March 13».h, when the trophies will be presented. Tiie state of the fire plugs in the Borough was brought before the monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Fire Brigade last evening by Superintendent Wallis who stated that a number of tho plugs required raising. He expressed the opinion that some had been put iu badly in the first, place. Round some of them the cement blocks had a tendency to dip inwards, thus allowing small stones, gravel, dirt and water to collect, on top of the plugs, making it difficult to take off the lid Tho superintendent, thought that if the blocks in some cases were treated with a little cement and an outward slope given, the water and gravel would naturally run off when a heavy rain was falling. It was divided to bring this matter under the notice of the Borough, Council
