DISTRICT NOTES.
Mrs J. B. Ciarruthers wag hostess at a Red Cross tea, held at her residence, Hamua, on Wednesday. A very interesting afternoon was spent b;.- tlie ladies of the (committee in miajking !> V-'idages, many-tailed and otherw'se, for the wounded soldiers. The Red Cross Committee adknowledges wjtli thanks ,a donation of £2C from Mrs Payne, Hamua, which was tlie balance of monies received by her for goods sold since her garden party, which was held -.for the benefit of wounded soldiers some weeks ago. Tlie next Red Cross tea will be held at Mrs A. V. Udy’s, Hnkanui, on Thursday. The Hawke’s Bay War Relief Association is offering a salary of £5 a week for a secretary. The Hon. J. I). Ormond’s property at Woodville has been sub-divided into eleven farms of thirty acres each, and will be auctioned shortly. Last week a Woodville settler, Mr R. I>. Henry, had the misfortune to loose his woolshed and stable by fire, from a spark from, a burning rata tree. As a fierce gale was blowing et tlie time, it was impossible to save any of the contents, which included dray, harness, etc. The cowshed was saved with difficulty. There was no insurance on anything. A lady resident of Masterton has become a recruiting officer. A young man called at the office next to the Clu'h Hotel and expressed his desire to enlist. There was no officer to be found, but the lady who was arranging for the soldiers' dinner, took the young man’s name, gave him a card that she found in the room, and sent him, to the doctor. Later in the day a second man culled, and he was similarly treated.
