The Herald. PUBLISHED EVERY EVENING. MONDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1916. THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The suooeee of the Horticultural and Industrial Show > to.bo .held on March 7th and Bth, will depend upon the enthusiasm displayed by these in control and the support forthcoming from the people who have the material to exhibit. While the date is not suitable for all garden produce and flowers, an excellent season has been experienced ther 0 ought to be sufficient available to bring the exhibition up to the high standhrd reached in previous yean. Similarly there ought to b© no valid reason why the home industries and fancy work sections should not attract the usual keen competition, nor that the children's events should l not be abundantly filled. ft is just possible, howover, that the distractions of the times will be responsible for meagre entries unless the commifcteo in charge mhkes nn active canvass amongst possible exhibitors. The enit.husia.sts who supported the holding of the show this year will find it necessary to viligantly pursue entries if a creditable display, representative of the district, is to materialise. If the .Show is to be made worth while the main factor in success should not be left to chance. TUB ADVANCING PRICES. The newly-appointed Board of Trade ha© a rather formidable programme to fulfil in investigating possible methods of exploitation and in dealing with the extension of the Dominion’s trade, industry and oommeroe. The Board is expeotod to make full inquiry info the cost of war profits, prices of goods

and trad'd com bi nations so as to be | in a position to make recommendations to tb© Government. Such a task will require steady attention and dose investigation into many details of business enterprises, and the Board should have fruitful scope for* its activity in ferreting out the reason for the disparity in the increases in tile same classes of commodities in different towns. The average man is unable tq grasp why there should be an advance of say, ten per cent, all round on groceries in one town, and twenty per cent, increase in another town. The Board! may be able to provide some enlightenment.
