Last rear the Victorian Agricultural show was abandoned owing to the fact that the ground was needed »otr military purposes. It is intended to hold the show this year.

\t the Palmerston rain fair yesterday stud Romneys offered by Mr J. E Hewitt, of Mangamaire, brought good prices. One sold at 31 guineas and two at 16 guineas each. The matron of the Pahiatua Public Hospital desires to acknowledge gifts of fruit and jam from Airs Matheson, Balia nee. and a donation of fruit from Mrs Kemp, Kumeroa. 'Hie show committee has decided to set apart a portion of the showgrounds on Friday next as a stand for the vehicles of members. Mr P Thomson has been appointed steward in charge.

Mr A. E. Hayden, manager for Hayden’s Pictures, is arranging to have a series of kinematograph views of the Pahiatua show screened on show' night, also views of Carnival Park and scenes in Main street. A meeting of the Pahiatua A. and P. Association will be held on Tuesday next, when several matters in connection with the forthcoming gathering will be dealt with. The latest registration at the local Defence Office for active service is that of Corporal Trevor Hughes, “Waireka,” Pahiatua. This recruit is attaclnd to ‘A” Company. 17th Regiment, and has enlisted lor the Infantry.

Mr A. Drew, of Palmerston North, has received a cable from his son Sidney. late of Pahiatua, who went with the Ninth Reinforcements, stating that he had “arrived safely’’ at an unnamed port. The Postmaster-General has received official notice from the New Zealand Base Army Post Office that on November 12th lasi 183 bags of New Zealand mails, chiefly parcels and containing 78 registered articles, were lost at sea. Parcels would be <my>ng those despatched ironi New Zealand on September 23rd last and re-ad-dressed parcels of earlier despatch.

A motor car accident occurred near Mr V. Mekalick's residence. Mangarainarama. a day or so ago. A wellknown resident of Pahiatua, and a Hinemoa settler wore seated in the car. which suddenly swerved into a creek, and overturned. The occupants extricated themselves without any injury. The wind screen and mud guard of the car w ere damaged, and a quantity of mud was stall clinging to the machine when it was towed into the garage for repairs. Some improvements are being effected to the Pakiatua gasworks. Throe new retort® have been put in i and their construction is an advance on the usual system, the Gibbons’ pattern, the design incorporating ideas ot the proprietors. Mossrs Atkinson Bros. Each retort weighs over half a ton, and is capable of carrying 4f ewt. of coal, or a half-hundred-weight more than with the old retorts. In

ail there are now five retorts in use. The new work was carried out by Mr M. H. Biggs, under the personal supervision of Mr H. J. Atkinson, managing director, and the cost is somewhere about £2OO.
