RAIDERS IN THE ATLANTIC.
After being posted as missing the fate of several steamers has now been disclosed by the appearanc of the West African liner Appam a*t Newport News in charge of a German prize crew. The possibility of the equipment of steamers in neutral ports and their escape on commerce-destroying missions has previously been hinted at. OOne writer pointed out that ‘ ‘in the Dutch East Indies and in American ports there are some interned German liners. Also, in various countries particularly South America, there are ships and men who might be bought with German gold. If no fast steamer has been fitted up in any of the | American or East Indies ports, and smuggled away to sea on piratical business, then that negative state of things is a tribute to the alertness of neutral authorities and of the British and Japanese Navies; perhaps more to the Allied navies than to the neutral authorities.” That a raider has"
got loose is evidenced by the capture or sinking of a liaTf-dozen or more ships, including the Appam and the Australian meat carrier Clan Al’Tavish. Moeuve, by which the raider is called, was the name of a German gunboat Reported as sunk by British gunfire on August 9th of last year. As to her origin it is not possible that she ran the blockade from Germany, but it is probable that she was fitted up in and sfuggled out of a neutral port, in Central or South America. Evidently German submarines in the Atlantic are being aided by an armed raider from somewhere, and a substantial haul has E'en made.
