LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A meeting of the stewards of the Pahiatua Racing Club will be held this evening.

The nomination of teams for the Pahiatua Card Tournament close with the Secretary, Mr R. Hill, on Monday evening.

The Wairarapa Caledonian Society's Pipe Band, which took part in the Farmers’ Social last night, was assisted by the members of the Bush District Pipe Band. The visiting Band on arrival marched through Main street, playing spirited selections and arousing the enthusiasm of the residents.

The social committee appointed by the Konini Football Club to make arrangements for the Club’s social, next Wednesday, in aid of the Belgian Fund, report having made complete arrangements for the gathering. In anticipation of a crowded audience the committee intend making special preparations for the catering.

The football season in the Dannevirke Rugby Sub-Union opened this week with the following results: Woodville (10 points) defeated Excelsiors (3 points); Aotea (8) beat Old Boys (3). Woodville juniors scored a win over Excelsiors by 6 points to 3, while the Woodville thirds suffered defeat against the Dannevirke High School by 29 points to nil A considerable falling-off in the attendance of scholars at the Devin District High School is causing the committee much concern. The chief reason for this appears to be dissatisfaction on the part of parents at the rural course. At its last meeting the committee carried a resolution urging upon the Education Board the need of careful and immediate investigation into the matter with a view to restoring the popularity of the school. The local branch of St. John’s Ambulance Brigade is co-operating to assist the parent body to get together kit bags for the troops, and a meeting is to be held at the Mart office on Monday night to deal with the matter. Mrs David Crewe has received a communication stating that Her Majesty Queen Mary has approved a standard kit bag. and requested her Needlework Guild to co-operate with the British Red Cross Society in making and fitting hags to this pattern. The model kit is of strong canvas, 20 inches wide, 21 inches deep, including the flap, or 15 inches when closed. It is particularly requested that if the bags are filled, they shall oontain the following articles: Slippers (soft), socks (one pair), pyjamas, shirt, hand, kerchiefs (2), a towel, comb, toothbrush, nailbrush, soap, sponge (in a small sponge bag), writing paper (12 sheets), envelopes, an indelible pencil, the writing material in a rubber band.
