PAHIATUA PUBLIC LIBRARY.

The appointment of a new Committee to manage tbe affairs of the Pahiatua Public Library was considered by the Borough Council Wednesday nighty Crs. Davidson. Manifold, Ross were selected as the Council’s representatives. and then the question of representation of subscribers arose.

Mr A. W. Sedcole (who also attended the meeting) wrote stating he trusted his services to the institution during the past two years had given satisfaction. He expressed his willingness to act as a member of the new Library Committee, if appointed. The Rev. L. H. Fenn also wrote agreeing to a request of the M ayor to allow himself to be nominated for the Committee. .

C'r. Wilson enquired the number of Library subscribers, and he was informed it, was 68. The Town Clerk said the number had been placed at 80 in the last annual returns on account of the subscriptions received. The number fluctuated.

C*r. Wilson suggested that the subscribers might be given an opportunity of electing their own representatives, although he was not objecting to the two names submitted that evening C'r. Davidson favoured the present system, which appeared to have alwavs been the general one here. Cr. Ross said C'r. Wilson’s idea arose out of the fact that Woodville subscribers elected their own representatives. He strongly supported Mr Sedeole being again appointed. The latter took a great interest in the institution, and it would be a loss to the Library if he was not re-appointed.

In reply to Or. Weston the Town Clerk explained that the Council had been in the habit of electing the whole of the Committee.

Cr. Wilson said he was quite satisfied to let it go at that.

Cr. Weston enquired regarding the country representation on the Committee. Cr. Ross said he had been representing the country. In the discussion, it transpired that the number of town arid country subscribers was almost equal.

On the motion of Cr. Wilson, it was decided that the subscribers’ representatives should be recommended by the Library Committee of the Council.
