Admiral Patey in his statement deplores the submarine disaster and adds “The only gleam of consolation is that the loss was not due to the action of the enemy, but the officers and men have just as truly given their services to the Empire as if they had been killed.” GALES IN THE NORTH SEA. London, Last Night. Destroyers report that owing to gales in the North Sea patrol work has been carried on in the greatest discomfort. It was impossible to light the galley fires for two days, but the men continue in tho highest spirits. VALUABLE CARGOES SEIZED. London, Last Night. A warship has brought to Queenstown the Holland-American liner Rendam from New York carrying contraband. Hie steamer Wemervinnen, bound to Hamburg, has been captured and taken to Sierra Leone. Her cargo of nitrate is valued at £50,000. Four large German steamers have been seized at Hong Kong ENGAGE THEIR OWN SHIPS. A LIVELY BATTLE. Petrograd, This Day. Confirmation has been received that the damaging of German warships at Kiel was due to a flotilla engaged in hunting passenger ships in the Baltic mistaking its own vessels for Russians. A lively battle ensued, several cruisers being baldly mauled. Many men were wounded. MINE SWEEPING. Pekin, Last Night. The crew of a Japanese boat engaged in mine sweeping at Kaio-chau applied for employment in this work by writing their petition in their own blood.
