GENERAL NEWS.

In a lecture on the wonder of the honey bee at tlie Concert. Chamber. Wellington, Mr O. R. Bostock, of Hawke’s Bay referred to the socialistic habits of the insect, remarking that the bee had solved tin* problem of perfect socialism thousands of years before man <‘oramenced to fret and fume about the subject. A careful study, however, of the social system of the beehive had filled him with doubts as to its application to the human race. For example, he remarked that the very hour that the worker bee ceased to be a producer be either went away ;nd died or was put to death by the official executioners of the hive. The wings of the worker in a busy season lasted about three weeks, certainly never more than six weeks at the very outside, and as soon as he found he was unable to fly with his load of nectar he knew that his little day was done. Many of t.hia goods raised in price are manufactured in the colonies, and the considerable stocks of some lines held by the wlwil esnlie houses and manufacturers, 1 which have not been affected by the war. have also gone up ifi price.
