The milk supply at the Alangatainoka Cheese Factory yesterday was 7'JO gallons .which was a considerable increase on the supply for the corresponding day of last season. Of sixteen Chinese charged at Wellington yesterday with being found in a common gaming house two wered i-s charged, two fined £3 each and the remainder It? each. A London message states that Duncan (141), Yardon (143). and Ray (144) were the principal winners at the Thirty-six Holes Tournament at 1 fish <i ps -Stort ford, defeating sixty leading professionals ,including Taylor .Sherlock, Braid, Ball, and Mitchell. The fortnightly meeting of die Pahiatua Druids’ Lodge was held last evening. Bro. J. Trezise, P.A.D., presided. One nt>w member was iniated into the Order. A quantity of routine business was transacted. The half-yearly meeting will he held on next lodge night. What would some of our sheepfarmers think of land that feeds sixty-four sheep to the acre? Two Taranaki farmers, who have lately visited New South Wales, were informed by n landholder in that State that he knew of some irrigated land that fed sixty-four sheep to the acre for four months of the year. It was rather a “stagger” to the visitors, but the New South Wales farmer was well known to one of them, or his veracity might have been doubted. Reporting to the Council of tho Wellington Chamber of Commerce this week, the president (Air 0. Jones) stated tht Air Mclntosh and himself had accompanied the Minister for Public Works to Pongaroa in connection with the proposed East Coast railway connection. Mr Jones said that at a gathering at Pongaroa he had pointed out that the proposed railway had the entire sympathy of the Wellington business community. Ho had found, however, that the settlors were pulling in different direr tons; some wanted one route and some another, while a not her section were asking merely for feeders to the existing lines. The chamber could hardly take sides with tiny one section, and all they could do was to advise the settlers to put their heads together and make one common cause. The cost of repairs at the Pahiatua Public School during the past year amounted to only lfis fid. The headmaster attributed this last evening to the great variety of conveniences for pastimes which were provided for the children. f • A meeting of the social committee of the Alangatainoka Athletic Society was held last evening. Air G. W. Chatwin presided. It was decided to hold the first of a series of dances, in aid of the funds, on Wednesday, Alay 13th. It was also decided to procure the refreshments from Mr East, of Pahiatua, and to engage a pianist and a violinist to supply the dance music.
