MURDER OF SHEVKET PASHA.
THE KAVALKY CASE. RUSSIA WANTS AN INQUIRY. Electric Telegraph—Press Association Copyriizht. Constantinople, Last Night. Although it is officially stated that Kavalky Mustapha, who was sentenced to death in connection with the murder of Shevket Pasha, Turkish Grand Vizier, some time, committed suicid.e in his cell, it is believed he succumbed to police methods of extoi-t----ing information concerning the doings of Saba Eddin and other opponents of the present regime. Kavalky was degarded as their emissary. There are indications that Russia will insist on a rigid inquiry.
Kavalky Mustapha was arrested on board a Russian steamer, with the cooperation of the Russian Consul, who apparently was misled by representations that Kavalky was an ordinary criminal. The Russian Ambassador protested, and demanded the return of tile prisoner and the dismissal of Aymi Bey, Prefect of Police, for tho deception. Kavalky Mustapha has not been returned to the Russian authorities, but a courtmartial re-tried him and confirmed the death sentence. It is believed tho Porte refuses the Russian Consul’s demand for tho man’s release, on the ground that he also committed non-political murders. Amyi Bey’s appointment as Vali of Adana is interpreted as forestalling a demand for his dismissal.
