Counsel said that Windle was only a hoy in years, and he had a wife a year younger than himself, and a child horn in March. He had been in asmall business as a. chemist in England, but his health broke down and he was ordered away for his health, with the result that he tame to New Zealand twelve months ago with his wife. He had worked as a chemist’s assistant and later in a jeweller’s -hop. but the wages were onlv £2 a week He endeavoured to get better work, hut that resulted in his getting out of work altogther, and he and his wife were cm the point of staravtion. He concealed frm his wife that he was unemployed, and in order to get money for food he entered on a series of thefts, selling the stolen goods. It was a case of desperation caused by hunger. His Worship said he thought there was little doubt accused did not fully recognise his responsibilities, and in other cireuinstances he would have been given a term of years of reformative treatment. Tt. was impossible that he should not be punished at all. and he would he sentenced to two months’ hard labour.
