The proceedings brought by the Crown against the Colonial SugarCompany and the Merchants’ Association for an alleged breach of the Commercial Trusts Act were continued to-day, when the Attorney-Gene-ral resumed his opening address. Voluminous extracts from letters sent by the Sugar Company and Alerchants’ Association were read. The case is likely to last some days. Dargaville, This Day. The Borough Council recently applied for an instalment of £6OOO on account of the £20,000 approved by the Advances Office. The Advances Office has now wired that payment has beeii delayed in consequence of the Amending Act of 1912, which requires all moneys paid after the passing of the Act to he at the rate at which the money is raised plus 2s 6d per cent, administration expenses. The Act also requires a resolution by the local authority pledging it to pay the increased rate. The Council is called on to pass such a resolution, aud to have the Council debentures already signed before the £6OOO is advanced. 'Flic money being urgently required for contracts in progress, the Mayor gave the undertaking asked for, but the Council passed a resolution protesting against “the unprecedented action of the Depart - ment,” demanding the fulfilment of tlie contract entered into at the rate of £3 10s per cent, per annum with a sinking fund of £1 6s Od per cent. The loan is repayable in 36) years. The Council condemns the alteration of the terms on which the loan was agreed to by the ratepayers. Christchurch, This Day.

At the Magistrate’s Court this morning Alex. AVildey was charged with having failed to keep a copy of a document printed by him, and with having neglected to produce tlie copy when demanded h.v a Justice of tlie Peace. Tlie document concerned was a betting card. The defendant was fined £lO and costs on each charge, the Alagistrate saying he was satisfied that- defendant had been attempting wilfully to defeat the gaming legislation.

With a view to advertising the danger of persons suffering from infectious diseases using public vehicles, a case was brought at tlie Alagistrate’s Court to-day against a man who, suffering from scarlet fever, rode in a cab. A fine of £1 was inflicted.

Auckland, Last Niglit. The last length of the Sydney to Auckland cable was laid yesterday from the steamer Silvertown, being landed at Aluriwai, on the West Coast. The operation was completely successful. Christchurch. Last Night. A rather interesting issue was mentioned in a Supreme Court judgment in the divorce proceedings between Cyrus Davie and Elizafieth Davie. Petitioner alleged desertion. The wife went to England in 1899, remained there, and finally refused to return, but the parties liad corresponded, tlie respondent saying in several letters that she would not oppose divorce. Petitioner contended that the wife's letters were written with the object of raising collusion as a bar to his divorce proceedings while the respondent- was endeavouring to get him to commit himself to some admission which she could use against him. The Court held that the petitioner had established his casa», «ml was entitled to a decree nisi.

Auckland, Last Night. An inquiry was opened before the Coroner and a jury this morning in connection with the death of an infant. whose hotly was found in a locked brief hag on some steps at the waterfront in Quay street. Dr. Casement Aicken deposed to having made a post-mortem examination. Tlie body was fully nourished, and weighed 61h, which was below the average. It had las'ii treated in a very primitive manner, and a cord was tied three times round the neck. A piece of tapo three-quarters of an inch wide was also tied in a reef-knot around the neck. At the request of the chief detective the Coroner granted an adjournment until December 17 to allow of further }>olice inquiries.
