FOOTBALL.

BUSH RUGBY UNION. LAST SATURDAY’S MATCHES. NOTES ON THE PLAY. (BY OFFSIDE). in the mutch Miuigataiuoka v. i n-hiat-ua, played nt Pa-liiatna. oil Saturday, Mangatainoka secured the verdict by the narrow margin of 8 points to 7. For the winners Palmer, Short and Cowan, in the backs, played sterling games. In the forwards, Harvey, Pilkinton, McCormick, and Bainbry wore always conspicuous. For I*alliatua Stewart, Yule and the Mexteds did wonders for their side, while m the forwards Hewitt, Boydeji, Swainson, -Morris, and -Munns worked like Trojans. Mr Polling was referee. The. game on Saturday at Konini was not of a very brilliant description, and calls for little comment as an exhibition of football. For one thing there was far too much talk and appealing to the referee. When will players in the Bush district learn that it is of no use appealing, that tlie referee will immediately blow i.« whistle when ho sees the rules infringed, and that all the appealing possible will not inthienee him! There is no doubt that if this appealing and unnecessary talk is not stopped referees will have to deal with the matter in a. stringent way. There is another aspect to this matter. As we have a number of young players out this season, they have on several «*ecasions, owing to their lack of knowledge, stopped playing when they heard their older and more experienced companions appealing. I should strongly advise them, when in doubt, to play to the whistle, and take no notice of appeals by players.

The Konini team was not very brillicnt on Saturday. Fercy llisset was on the wing, and played Ids usual clean, honest game, but showed that he wanted a hit of work to bring him into form. Gordon Smith was playing centre three-quarter, and was always ready when needed with his faking and kicking. 1 have, however, seen him. play a. better game. H odgms, a young player, scored the winning try. and will with practice make a name far himself in Bush football. He USC.S his head, takes llie hall well, and on the field has a fair amount of j>acc. A. llisset, as full-back, is quite a tyro. He, however, got through a lot, of work ill good style, hut was overburdened with instructions. The forwards were an even lot, but a very poor serum was formed. Both teams were at fault ill this respect. It is to be hoped tlie KoniniClub will soon

get their new colours, as on Saturday they wire a very ‘‘piebald" lot. and made it very hard for the referee to distinguish. In the Makomako team O’Dca was very prominent. He got through a lot of work well, but at times showed lack of judgment with bis kicks. YVhibley, on the wing, was fair. I«arsen was prominent at times in tlie loose work, being always on tin- ball. F. Ebbett put in a lot of good work. \Y. Tait was the pick of the Makomako backs, but would make a much better forward, as he always shines where the work is hardest. However, as his team is short of hacks lie has to play to suit his team. H. Martin, a young lad, showed promise, hut would lie suited better by a season in the juniors to give him confidence.

"Terry" Ne-s got bis side out of a number of difficulties. JUNIOR (HUB FORMED. THE BLACK STARS. A meeting of junior footballers was held in the Club Hotel last evening, when it was decided to form a junior football club in I’aliiatua, the name of the club to he the "Black Stars.” Officers and committee were elected as follow: Uatpoo, Father T. McKenna: president, Mr |{. A. Grant; vice-presidents, Mr J. I. Fox, •I. Tanner, I). Crewe, W. Owen, \Y. I. Husband, H. A. Thomson, \V. <kwhln, R. V. King, I’. Tullocli. L. W. 1 aiiigmore, G. Early, G. M. Farmer, A. 8. Evans, G. Oxley ami M. Fitzgerald; secretary arid treasurer, .Mr W. Cade; delegate to Hush Rugby Union, Mr A. Bentley; selection committee, Messrs A. Bentley, A. Eager. I’. Ryan; captain, A. Bentley; viecnaptnin, A. Eager; general committee, Messrs Bentley, Eager, Ryan, J. Riddell and S. Bright.well. It was decided that the colours of the club he black pants and white jerseys, with a black star.

A number of those present remarked on the poor support, accorded to the juniors by members of the senior teams in the Bush district. It was pointed out that, if the. juniors were not. entered for, there would he no senior players in in. lew years. It was decided to write to the Hush Rugby Union and roque t that the junior fixtures lie drawn up as soon as possible.

The subscription lor the year was iixed at 2s lid. A number of those present paid their subscript ion, enough, funds being collected to parch MM <t toothed.

It was decided to arrange a practice game with Makomako on Wednesday, May 15th. A vote of thanks to Mr R. Grant for the use of the room terminated the meeting.
