A GREAT COUP.
STIRRING UP THE BOOKMAKER. POLICE RAID IN AUCKLAND. EIGHTY ARRESTS MADE. SENSATION IN THE CITY. Electric Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Four detachments of police raided certain premises in Vulcan Lai»e, Coomhs’ Arcade and British Buildings this afternoon, and detained all persons therein on charges of being found in a common gaming house. The raids were the results of months of observation and proved a great success, no warnings of the intentions of the police being given. The police considered they held sufficient evidence to warrant the raids, and the result was that nearly eighty persons were arrested. The arrested persons ware conveyed to the police station and there brought before Justices of the Peace. The principals were released in bonds of £2OO each, and those found on the i remises in bonds of £lO each. The persons concerned will appear at Court to-morrow. The proceedings have created a sensation in the city.
