PAHIATUA TENNIS CLUB.

EIGHTH ANNUAL TOURNAMENT. RAIN STOPS”THE FINALS. The eighth annual tournament of the Pahiatua Lawn Tennis Club commenced on the club’s court yesterday, and was continued to-day.. The entries, though not so large as in former years, were good, and some keen contests were witnessed during the day. Many of the handicap games were very close. The courts were little worn and very true, though on the slow side. By the end of the first day most of the events had been brought to the semi-final stages, and the semi-finals were played today. The arrangements for the tournament, which were made by the energetic secretary of the club (Mr J. G. Swainson), were excellent. An enjoyable dance was held in St. Peter’s Sunday schoolroom last evening, and was well attended by members of the Pahiatua Tennis Club and visiting players. Some strong players met in the men’s championship singles yesterday. Druce went down to Giesen after a tussle he never looked like winning. Druce was not playing up to form, and was seldom aggressive. Giesen was driving accurately and placing well near the lines. Swainson beat Vartan with a bit to spare. The longest tussle of the day was that between J. Thompson and T. Page. Towards the end both players showed an excess of caution and the third set ran to 9 —7 before falling to Thompson. In the men’s championship doubles Father McKenna again dor.ned flannels, and in his garni' with Chambers against Turner and Page showed a good deal of form, especially at the net.

In the combined handicap doubles this morning Swainson and Miss R. Hughes (owe 25) met Vartan and sliss L. D. Hughes (owe 5). The handicap proved too much for Swainson and his partner, and after pulling up a little they lost ground and failed to recover sufficiently. Jliss L. D. Hughes played an excellent game. Druce and sliss Tennent established their right to enter the semi-final of the combined championship by beating Giesen and sliss D. Booth. After starting badly and being in a minority of I—3 Druce and Miss Tennent played splendidly and won by 9—4. Drue© was playing more confident and enterprising tennis than yesterday. The semi-finals of the men’s championship doubles were played just before lunch to-day. Giesen and Vartan won from Chambers and Father McKenna without being extended, and Swainson and Druce held Green and Thompson fairly easily. Rain commenced to fall during the luncheon adjournment to-day, and the outlook is very unpromising. This is all the more regrettable as some excellent ,games were promised in the finals.
