IMPROVEMENTS BEING EFFECTED. A largely-attended meeting of the general committee of the PahiatuaAkitio A. and P. Association was held last evening. Mr A. McFarlane, president, occupied the chair. The recommendations of the subcommittee, regarding the new show ground, were confirmed, and it was resolved that tenders be called for the erection of a grandstand, according to plans and sketch submitted, by Mr J. D. Wilson. The grandstand which it is proposed to erect will be covered, and have seating accommodation for over 300 persons. The ring is to be laid off, fences erected, and the grounds generally are to be got in order without delay. The question of raising debentures was discussed, and it was decided to ascertain what financial assistance could be obtained in that direction. The following gentlemen promised to take up debentures of £5 each: Messrs T. Boyd (2), F. H. Vincent (1), C. Avery (5), A. McFarlane (5), T. P. Girdwood (o), W. W. McCardle (1), J. D. Wilson (2), G. A. Burgess (I), W. H. Yule (1). Captain J. B. Whyte, who has left the district; tendered his resignation as vice-president. Reference was made by the chairman and others to the valuable services Captain Whyte had rendered the Association, that gentleman being one of the promoters of the society. Captain Whyte has donated 10 guineas for a trophy for next show. It was resolved to elect Captain Whyte a life member of the Association, and to place on record appreciation of his services. Mr T. Boyd was unanimously elected vice-president. Mr Boyd, in returning thanks, referred to the gift auction sale, which it is intended to hold during the New Year, and said he believed it would be very successful. Mr E. S. Holdawav wrote suggesting the holding of a novice judging competition at the next show. The suggestion was received with favour and adopted. It was pointed out that such a competition would be of an educational nature, particularly for farmers’ sons. The president expressed the opinion that, the acquirement of new showgrounds would mean a big thing for the Association. A great deal of interest was being manifested in the next gathering. He alluded to the energy the secretary was displaying in obtaining new members and special prizes. A good deal of success is being met with in the latter connection. Messrs F. H. Vincent and G. Harold Smith have been canvassing a portion of the town. Mr Girdwood was deputed to attend the timber sale at Mangatainoka on behalf of the Association.
