For failing to register a dog a Foxton resident was fined Is, with costs 12s, and was ordered to pay the registration fee of 10s. A cow with two ear-marks on its left ear calved on Mr Lovelock’s property at Scarborough one day last week. The calf had exactly the same marks on its left ear. Hares are reported numerous in several parts of the Masterton district. They have a partiality for orchards and gardens.

The building trade is brisk at Napier. One firm is employing between 150 and 160 men on contracts and pays out considerably over £4OO weekly in wages. As a result of the shipping strike, Foxton storekeepers raised the price of kerosene Is 6cl per case, and sugar Is per bag, to cover the cost of extra railage freight.

Rats to the number of 258 were received and paid for at the Napier waterworks from September 25th to October 25th, the amount expended being £3 4s 6d. “With the completion of the new premises for the Bank of New South AVales at the corner of Mangahao road, Pahiatua will have three banking institutions in the main street within a little over 100 yards distance of each other. Cabinet has decided to start the Stratford Alain Trunk railway at Te Koura, which is about five miles south of Ongarue. The engineer advises that this saves over six miles of construction, also a monetary saving of £70,000, besides the upkeep for all time. The ceremony of turning the first sod of the railway at Te Koura will be arranged to take place at the earliest possible date, the Premier officiating.

Napier has a tarring machine, which many of the residents regard as a white elephant, and it has been put into commission again. It is j stated that last year the authorities j tried an experiment and divided a | section of the Parade into two equal ! parts—one being tarred by the maJ chine and the other by hand. It was found that the machine did the work j ever so much quicker and at a i slightly smaller cost. Association on Saturday a letter was rend from the secretary of the New Zealand Itonmey Marsh Breeders’ Association, giving the results of the conference held at Palmerston North between the joint committees of the two Associations, on the question of holding a. llomney ram sale under the auspices of the llomney Marsh Association at Masterton. It was pro|>oscd that the Alasterton Association setup n sub-committee of two, to act with Messrs R, Gray and ,T. E. Hewitt, to act us stewards on the day of the sale. Three prizes .would be given for two-tooths. and three for fnur-tooths. The llomney Association would appoint its own judges. Alessrs AA*. I>. Watson, AA*. lVrrv and R. Cooper were appointed to represent the Masterton Association as stewards, and the report of the conference was adopted.

A man named Samuel Keats was arrested at Te Whiti on Saturday charged with stealing clothing and jewellery, of the value of £l2, from the Admiral Run on October 28th. The accused was brought up at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, and remanded to Carterton.

The first annual dance under the auspices of the Eketahuna Hockey Association was held on Friday evening, and proved a fitting termination to a successful season. Music was suplied by Miss Tuckwell, of Hamua. During the evening Mr Fitzgerald, of Hamua, danced a cake-walk, to the amusement of those present. Mr A. H. Herbert presented the following trophies:—Cup, presented by Mr Herbert for the winners of the ladies’ competition, to be won twice in succession, or three times at intervals, the Eketahuna Club ; Druids' Challenge Cup, the Druids’ Club. The runners’-up for the ladies’ competition, the Hamua Club, was presented with a trophy donated by Air Herbert, and the captain of the team, Afiss Violet Tuckwell. was presented with a medal donated by Mr Bradetock.
