ABSENCE FROM SCHOOL

fHE RECOGNISED EXCUSES

1 * xke paltry excuses and bogus notes, wnich hitherto have been handed to teachers when children have absented themselves from school, will no longer pass muster. In future more denude and valid reasons must be forthcoming when Tommy or Sarah is not round in his or her accustomed place. The Education Act Amendment of last session requires the attendance at school every time the school is open of all children between the ages of 7 and 14 years, who have not reached the standard of exemption. which is Standard V". It now becomes the duty of every teacher to report those children who are absent without reasonable cause. The following are the reasons which may. in the eye of the law. justify absence:That the total distance the child is required to go to school is more than two miles, for a pupil under 10 years of age, or three miles in any other case ; that the child is under efficient and regular instruction elsewhere: sickness or infirmity of pupil or parent: bad roads; or that the child bolds a certificate that it has reached the standard of education prescribed by the regulations.
