A girl named Elizabeth JL. Greenwood died to-day under peculiar circumstances at Panuiure. The deceased, who was under sixteen years of
age, was a witness in a case against a man named Frank Tate, who is to come up tor trial oil a charge of haviug had improper relations with her mule she was under age. A constable received a message this morning to tlie effect that the girl had been suddenly taken ill. and on visiting the house found her in a very low state. The constable at once summoned medical aid, but the girl died within ten minutes of Dr. Barber's arrival. It is stated that the girl told an acquaintance thta she intended to take "Rough on Rats, - ’ but no heed was paid to the threat.
A sudden death occurred at the Kingsland railway station this morning. Mr and Mrs Joe Level, residents ot Hoteo North, who had been in town on a short visit, were returning home, and w ere about to get on the outwardbound train when Mr Levet dropped on the platform and expired almost immediately. Deceased was about fifty-six years of age. The question ot tlie Sail Francisco mail service was discussed at great length at a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. It. was decided to write to the Sydney Chamber of Commerce to ascertain what prospect there was ot obtaining an Australian subsidy lor the re-establishment of tlie service, with Auckland ana Sydney as parts ot call.
April 30. The conference between tlie Builders' and Contractors' Association and the Labourers' Union, at which Mr Harle Giles presided, arrived at a satisfactory settlement of the dispute. The representatives of both sides expressed unqualified satistaction at the manner in which the Commissioner dealt with the matter. Tlie Labour representative expressed surprise and pleasure at the tact and business ability displayed By Mr Giles, and said there was no question that lie was the right man in the light place.
