A Press Association cablegram dated Loudon, the lltli instant, announces the doat?i of Mr Algernon Charles Swinburne, the poet, at the age of ”2 years from pneumonia. He was the son of Admiral Charles Henry Swinburne and Lady Jane Henrietta, daughter of the third Earl .of Ashburnham. Swinburne has been des-
cribed as “the greatest metrical inventor in English literature,” and it has been claimed for him that it is
as a lyrist in some ways unsurpassable that he will keep a place in the literature of his country. The death of Mr Francis Marion Crawford, novelist and historian, in his fifty-fifth year, is announced by a Press Association cablegram. He was the son of Thomas Crawford, an American sculptor, and gained fame hv his romances of Europe (especially Italy), India and America. The death occurred on (Saturday evening of Captain William J. Gibbons, the respected licensee of the Crown Hotel. Port Ahuriri, at the ago of 61 years. The deceased was well known on the coast, especially in connection with the Wellington-Pa-tea shipping trade. He was a prominent Freemason, being a Past Grand Deacon of the Grand 1/odge of New Zealand. Much sympathy will bo extended to the widow in her bereavement. Members of Scinde and other Lodges were present at a lodge of sorrow in memory of tlnir late brother on Tuesday afternoon and attended the funeral afterwards. A Press Association telegram from Dunedin announces the death of Captain Angus Cameron, marine superintendent of the Union Strain Ship Company. Madame Melba arrived at Bluff from Australia by the Riverina on Monday. She sprained her knee on board tile boat and bad to be assisted to her carriage. The accident will not interfere with her engagements.— Press Association.
Archbishop Redwood, who celebrated his seventieth birthday on Thursday, received numerous letters and telegrams of congratulation and goo< wishes, and many valuable presents. Mr John Drummond, inspector of stock in Wellington, who has lawn retired on superannuation, was pre-
sented with an address by a number of his friends in the Department of Agriculture. The death is announced from Dunedin of Mr Allan Holmes, barrister, who was for many years a prominent figure in golfin and cricketing circles.
