EASTER ENCAMPMENTS.

Electric Telegraph—Press Association, Dannevirke, April 12.

The Easter encampment at Oringi broke up to-day. Fine weather prevailed till Sunday, when heavy rain fell. On Friday there was a parade of troops, with battalion movements. On Saturday there was work in the shape of an engagement with an enemy from adjacent hills. The enemy was repulsed, but flanking movements failed. On Sunday rain fell steadily all day, and effectively prevented all useful work. To-day the manoeuvres were continued in fine weather. A further attack was made, and excellent shooting was done by the artillery, who fired live shells. A pontoon bridge had been erected across the Manawatu river, but it was washed away as a result of Saturday’s rain. The camp was admirably arranged, but the hospital under the medical staff was kept full with volunteers suffering from complaints and accidents.

The brigade staff officers who- cooperated with Lieutenant-Colonel Bauehop were the following:—Captain T. W. McDonald, A.A.G.; BrigadeMajor A. H. Russell, O.C. mounted troops; Major J. R. Purdy, P.M.0.; Major A. R. Young; Captain W. H. Morton, intelligence officer; Captain Mostyn Jones, staff officer; Captain G. T. Hall, staff officer; Lieutenant Page, supply officer ; Lieutenant Rapley, transport officer; Lieutenant Duigan, staff engineer officer; Captain Henderson, signalling officer; Staff Sergeant-Major Sanderson, brigade .sergeant-major; Staff Sergeant-Major Peacock, brigade sergeant-major. The parade state of the camp was as follows:—Brigade staff 19, D Battery 96, Engineers 55, Ist Regimen* Mounted Rifles 99, 2nd Regiment Mounted Rifles 71. 3rd Regiment Mounted Rifles 70, 4th Regiment Mounted Rifles 36, Ist Battalion Wellington Rifles 498, 2nd Battalion Wellington Rifles 236, 3rd Battalion Wellington Rifles 110, 4th Battalion Wellington Rifles 1»9, sth Battalion Wellington Rifles 108, field ambulance 19, medical officers 5, veterinary 1, Permanent Force 9, unattached officers 6, general staff 3, cadets 368; total 1935.

Auckland, April 12. The weather was beautifully fine on Friday and gave a good opening to the volunteers manoeuvres. which were held on a large scale at the forts of the harbour and at Morriusville. RIFLE CU BS’ CAMP. Palmerston North, April 12. The rifle clubs’ camp broke up on Saturday afternoon. Colonel Collins expressed himself as well satisfied with the work done. OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND. Gore, April 12. The annual Easter encampment of the Otago and Southland volunteers was held amid the Hokonuis. The precipitous country passed tnrough necessitated the heights being patrolled. the instruction thus afforded being very useful.
