“BLACK HAND” SOCIETY.
ASSASSINATION OF A DETECTIVE. A MONSTER FUNERAL. Electric Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. New York, April 13. The body of the American detective Petrosini, who was making investigations in connection with the “Black Hand” organisation, and who was assassinated in the public square at Palermo, in Sicily, in broad daylight by a Mafia gang, has been brought to New York. The murder of Petrosini caused a sensation in New York, where 23 “Black Hand” outrages took place in 1908, including bomb-throwing, arson, and assassination. Apparently, a group of blackmailers are using the sign of the “Black Hand, ’ and their activities are not political in origin or aim. It is said that Petrosini did more than any man in the United States to bring Italian criminals to justice. Since its arrival here the body had been constantly guarded to prevent a “Black Hand” outrage by 3000 police. One hundred thousand persons attended the funeral.
