STEAMER COLLISION.
PLEASURE BOAT DAMAGED. Electric Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. Melbourne, September 5. The steamer Lenra, with over one hundred passengers on board, was making an excursion round the United States fleet, when the American collier Ajax, outward bound, collided with her. The collier cut deep into the Leura’s starboard quarter, making a hole 70 feet, square, exending from the deck to below the water line. The vessels hung together until the passengers had clambered aboad the Ajax or been transferred to a tug manned by men from the battleship Connecticut, which oame to their assistance. The Leura’s bulkheads remained intact, and prevented her from sinking. She returned to port. The Ajax’s bow was badly battered, several plates being wrenched out of position. She was docked. There was a momentary panic among the Leura’s passengers, and one or two women fainted. (The Lenra is an iron screw steamer of 1186 tons gross, owned by Howard Smith and Co., Ltd., Melbourne.)
