Local dealers in ammunition are forwarding a protest to the Coiniuis. sioner of Customs against the proposed increased duty on sporting cartridges from Is 6d per hundred to 2s Gd. They say the proposed duty will amount to sixty per cent, on the cheaper grades and forty on the best grades, which rates are practically prohibitive, and will prevent a large number of cartridges being used. In the rabbit-infested country of Otago and Southland shooting is necessary us an auxiliary to poisoning and trapping. The petitioners an.-ge that the Colonial Ammunition Company ot Auckland will alone benefit by the proposed increase in duty, and object to monopoly by one firm.
