COLLISION AT SEA.
A STEAMER SINKS. ONE HUNDRED PASSENGERS DROWNED. Electric Telegraph—Press Association. Copyright. London, July 23. Reuter’s San Francisco correspondent- states that a small steamer, named the San Pedro, laden with timber, collided, at midnight on Saturday, off Eureka, in a heavy log. with the steamer Columbia, of 2700 tons, carrying numerous San Franci'CO passengers. The San Pedro struck the poit bow, tearing an immense hole in tire Columbia. The passengers hurried ou deck, where a wild panic ensued. The Columbia sank in five minutes. \ lifeboat was launched and savi-d a few. Eight were saved by clinging to the> San Pedro. Lloyds state that one hundred were drowned. Two hundred were -aved by a passing steamer. Other accounts give the number of drowned as 150, including the captain of the Columbia. One story states that every woman perished.
