THAW'S ECCENTRICITIES.

MAD PRANKS INDULGED IN DURING VISITS TO PARIS.

Thaw’s Parisian landladies are unanimously ot tlie opinion that their lodger was quite irresponsible for his actions. Mme. Valenbrocke, in whose house he lived in 1901, said that Thaw’s counsel had asked her tor information as to the doings of her lod. ger, and she had furnished them. “These revelations,” said the good dame, “are such as would prove Thaw’s mental irresponsibility before any lunacy commission in the world.” Thaw was in the habit of doing the maddest possible things. He would return at all hours of the night, and sing and dance as if he were in a cafe cliantant. His automobile would be kept waiting outside all day,ana sometimes far into the night, but he rarely used it. He has been known to slide down the barristers like an impetuous solioolboy, and another trick was, while mounting the stairs, to fling his hat at those who happened to be beneath. Sometimes the missle hit someone, and then Thaw’s joy was unbounded. Over and over again, he narrowly escaped setting the house on lire in some mad prank. In September, 190-i, Thaw appeared in the Avenue Mantignon, in which he usually occupied furnished apartments when in Paris, in company with Evelyn Nesbit, and again became noticeable on account of his eccentricities. He got the idea that the whole house was his, and acted accordingly. One day lie encountered another tenant, an Austrian baron, on the stairs, and cuffed him violently The baron struck Thaw with a cane in self-defence, and afterwards sent his seconds to the millionaire. Thaw, pulling out a revolver.threatened to shoot the seconds and their principal if they worried him about any duels. Evelyn Nesbit exerciser* a restraining influence, and unless in his cups Thaw obeyed her implicitly. While in Paris Thaw frequented a well-known American bar, where curious stories are told of his doings. When alone he would generally order two drinks, one of which he would con. surae, the other he used as a douche by pouring it over his head.
