Rend, of Adelaide, president of the Federal Chamber of Afanufacturers, in addressing n meeting ot the members, gave his impressions of n recent visit to New Zealand. He said New Zealand was a colony for New Zealanders. That was to say. they wished to be independent of Aus trnlia. It was Protectionist, and in the present revision of the CustomBluff Australian products would practically he excluded. The Labour cle-
ment appeared to be dominant. The colony appeared to be in a prosperous state, but Australian workmen were returning to the Commonwealth. AL though earnlfig higher wages in New Zealand, other conditions existing made living dearer. When all things were summed up Australian workmen were better off in Australia than in New Zealand. In reply to a question with reference to coal mines, Air Read said the mines under the control of the Government had the effect of keeping down prices
