MANGATAINOKA ATHLETIC SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING

I The seventh annual meeting of the | above club was held in the Library | Hall. Mangatainoka, on Saturday j evening. There was a good atten- ' dance of members, and a good deal ; of discussion took place on the various j pioposals brought forward by the pre- ! sident in the course of his address. Mr J. H. James, president, presided. ANNUAL KEPOKT. j The report stated that the sports had been held on Boxing Day and that the society were favoured with fine weather and the members were to be congratulated on the result. There is a sum ot £l2 16s Id deposited in the Post Office Savings Bank. but against that sum there is an amount ot os Id owing to the president for cash advanced, which left a credit balance of £l2 11s. There were sufficient members tickets for the ensuing year, but more flags for the course and some rosettes were required. The hurdles would also need repairing. It is deemed invidious to mention specially anv of the officials, who worked, one and all, enthusiastically before, during and after the meeting, but it is entirely a matter for congratulation that so many gentlemen threw themselves heart and soul into the cause, and thus ensured itj success. It seems that the time has now arrived when a considerable increase should be made in the prize money. There are now other smaller meetings being held close at hand on the same day as our sports are held, and if the society is to maintain its supremacy locally it is necessary that the prize money should he increased to at least £IOO. Another matter that should receive the serious consideration of members is the price ot member's tickets. At present they are called family tickets, but as a matter of fact they only admit parents and their children under 12. and as the latter are under the present rules admitted free it will be seen tlyit in reality the ticket merely admits the holder and his wife. Several suggestions have been made to remedy this defect, the most reasonable of which appeals to he the following: That the price of tickets be incieased to 10s, and to admit the holder and all members of his family living under the same roof. All other school children to be charged sixponeo for admission, and all other adults one shilling. The difficulty that presents itself, if the proposal he adopted, is the admission of members of the family who present themselves at the gate at different times, hut the society in its wisdom will surely he able to devise some scheme to overcome this obstacle. Reference | was made to the exist of advertising, j which is considerexl too high. Then followed a scheme for advertising out- ■ side the district as well as locally, 1 which it is considered will be the ' menus of scouring more entries. In

"Conclusion, it must be borne in mind that if the prize money is increased as outlined »We, it will behove ever, member to exert himself in the matter of selling tickets, so as to ensure financial success- It will be necessary that £SO at least be raised. The reoort concluded by appealing to me m . bers to again rally round, and to make a special effort to ensure the eighth annual meeting of the -oeiety being the most successful da\ - uting in toe history of the club.
