GENERAL STOEBSEL WOUNDED. PART OF PORT ARTHUR IN FLAMES. THE GARRISON REDUCED TO THEIR LAST SHELL. “WE CAN AND WILL DIE FIGHTING. PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. London, November 4. General Stoessel has been wounded in the leg. Five warships in the harbour have been 3unk. Tbe south-west corner of the town is in flames. The Japanese have now connected their various tunnels, and fitted them with mines. French advices from St. Petersburg state that General Stoessel informed the Czar that the garrison wers reduced almost to their last shell. All the long range guns are either destroyed or out of action. “We cannot hold the fortress,” he reported, “ but we can die fighting for Russia and we will.” Mr Bennett Burlaigb, the “ Daily Telegraph’s ” war correspondent, saw from a steamer three huge successive explosions on Wednesday, possibly in New Town, Port Arthur. The “ Daily Telegraph’s " Chefoo correspondent, cabling on Thursday, stated that the latest Japanese assault on Port Arthur bad been repulsed with heavier losses than had ocourred during any previous attack.

London, November 4. Two divisions are shipping at Nagasaki for Kwantunp. General Stoessel’s message begging the Czar and Czarina’s blessing has croated a profound impression on St. Petersburg. It is considered as a supreme act of heroism, sacrificing himself and the garrison. Tho Japanese do not believe that ha will recklessly saorifioe the defenders when be realises that tbe position is hopeless.

The Mikado, speaking at the luncheon tendered to the diplomatists iu Tokio, re-cchoed his regrst that the time had not come to see peaca restored.
