WRECK OF THE VENTNOR

Further Details. [per press association.] Auckland, This Day. The third mate of the Ventnor states that the oaptain and himself jumped overboard. Beyond this the reports are very contradictory, and several are under the impression that the struck the captaiu’s boat and capsized. The second engineer states that as the boats pushed off, the night was awful and the water gradually rose over the deck to the stoke hole, when the stem lifted. Rising quicker and quicker, the steamer stood upright three or four seconds and sank with a whizzing sound, A jet of flame burst from the funnel as the vessel sank.
