The Amalgamated Sports committee meet this evening at 8 o’clock in the Foresters’ Hall. Mrs Hamilton advertises for a goed general servant for small family. A boy, 17 years of age, named Martin, has been sentenced to death at Perth for poisoning his sister. He administered arsenic in a cordial to several persons, *~and the sister died. The motive was jealousy. Messrs Barraud and Abraham, grain and seed merchants, Palmerston North, Feilding and Danevirke, insert un advertisement to-day of interest to farmers. Head it. On Sunday evening next in the Wesleyan Church the Rev. Mr Beggs will preach a funeral sermon in connection with the death of the late Mr Leavosley. A last word in connection with Tiger Teas and 1897 will be found in another column. Mr J. R. Graham is the local agent. Mr W. McPhail notifies by advertisement in another column that he will, if sufficient inducement offers, run a fourhorse coach to the Makuri Gorge on New Year’s Day. Intending passengers should apply to Mr McPhail. Return fare, 6s. Miss Ada Phillip, daughter of tho Rev. W. H. Philip, is at present spending her holidays at home. The young lady has secured a governors’fscholarship at the Wellington Girls’ High School, which carries two year’ free tuition. Miss Philip also secured second prize in mathmatics. Mr James Leavesley, father of Mrs Burrows and Mrs Wakeman, of Pahiatua, passed away on Christmas morning after a lingering illness at his daughter's residence, Main street. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Sunday afternoon last, the Rev. Mr Beggs conducting the burial service. The deceased gentleman was of the ripe age of 76, and his relatives have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. Mr C. Benzie has oponed a refreshment and fruit shop in connection with his Trocadero. The lettering on the front window is a splendid sample ol the signwriting art. The shop will be found most convenient for visitors who desire to enjoy a cup of afternoon tea with choice pastry or fruit. The rooms have been fitted up specially to supply a comfortable resting place for visitors. Everything is beautifully clean and cool, and without a doubt this enterprising move on the part of Mr Benzie will be well supported and highly appreciated by the public of Pahiatua and district. There has been a dearth of amusements here during the holidays, but it will be noticed by an advertisement in another column that a popular concert and drawing-room entertainment has been fixed for Friday evening next, the Bth inst., in the Olympic Theatre. The Pahiatua Orchestral Society and the Brass Band, together with Mr and Mrs Bryant (late of the Greenwood company) are engaged in providing a suitable programme, particulars of which will appear in Friday’s issue. The leading lady and gentleman amateurs of tlie district have consented to assist. Both Mr and Mrs Bryant are first-class entertainers. Mr Bryant is a splendid ventriloquist and has a number of figures, all of which will provide their share of amusement. Judging by the names of those whom we have heard as intending contributors the public can rest satisfied that a first-class evening’s amusement will be provided. If it required an annual outlay of SIO,OOO to insure a family against any serious consequences from an attack of bowel complaint during the year there are many who would feel it their duty to pay it; that they could not afford to risk their lives, and those of their family for such an amount. Any one can get this insurance for 25 cents, that being the price of a bottle of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhcea Remedy. In almost every neighborhood some one has died from an attack of bowel come plaint before medicine ceuld be procured or a physician summoned. One or two doses of this remedy will cure and ordinary case. It never fails. Can you afford to take the risk for so small an amount? For sale by C. ltidd chemist.
