SCENE IN A CHURCH.

A remarkable scene occurred in the Roman Catholic Church of St. Peter, Blackburn, recently. Father Depan, tho curate, was preaching, when Father Hirwan, the rector, rang the sanctuary hell violently, and compelled him to stop. Father Depan left the pulpit, and exchanged some words with his superior, and then returned and recommenced his address. He had not, however, proceeded far before Father Kirwan again stopped him, and peremptorily directod him to retire to the vestry. Father lurwan, who was visibly agitated, then ascended the pulpit, and apologised for the scene of which the congregation had been witnesses. He had stopped the sermon because Father Depan persistently declined :o bow his head at the mention of the Holy Name, and he was prepared to defend his action before his ecclesiastical superiors. The congregation, who had been greatly excited by the proceedings, then dispersed.
