ALTERATIONS AND ADDITIONS.
4. Caledonian House, Pahiatua
It is always satisfactory to note the improvement and enlargement of the business premises in our midst. There can be no better evidence of the progress or stability of a centre than the demand for larger premises and improvod accommodation. It nocessarily follows that wh it is true as regards the community is also true as regards tho individual or firm. Messrs R. Blair and Co. are therefore to be congratulated on the fact that the growth of their business has been of so marked a character as to compel them to make extra provision for the storago of their goods and tho convenience of their customers. Tho provision so made is, it must be at once admitted, fully adequate, even should the growth of the business oxceed tho most sanguine expectations of tho proprietors. From front to back there has been a thorough renovation, and to the rear of the premises has been added an annex, which will in future be used as a showroom. This room is lighted by a large window nine feet high by five feet in width, and through an arch the light penetrates into the main shop and assists to drive from it tho last vestige of gloom. Another now window high in the side of the main shop, has also helped considerably to make tho place wi 11-ligluod ami airy. Tho shop itself is now 54 feet in length, with a counter running the whole length. The fittings are new and up-to-date, and the attractiveness of the interior has been enhanced by the walls having been painted a light stone color. At olio end of tho shop is the office, in which there is a fire-place. An important feature of the alterations is tho bringing up-to-date of the show windows. Thoso have been deepened and broadened and fitted with plateglass and now for show purposes are ell that could he desired. The front of tho building has boon raised and presents a more imposing front to tho street. To-night the premises will he lighted up for a display of seasonable goods, particulars of which will ho found in the firm's now advertisement hearing on tho matter.
The alterations were carried out by Mr T. F. Ilcwat, and the painting and glazing by Mr .1. Smith, both of whoso work has given thorough satisfaction.
