A Lunatic Suicides. Auckland, This Day. The dead body of Thomas Meredith, the escaped lunatic, was found hanging to a tree near the asylum. The Natives Dispute. Auckland, This Day. Sir Henry Berkeley, Chief Justice of Fiji, will come from Suva shortly and go to Raratonga to enquire into tlie dispute between the Natives and Mr Moss, resident Magistrate. Is it Murder ? New Pcymouth, This Day. Constable Hickman received information this morning that a Maori woman named Kohirangi died suddenly at Parihaka. He went there and concluded it to be a case of murder as the body was lying in a whare and had a fearful gash behind the right ear. The body was found outside and carried in by the natives. Hickman arrested Enoko, the husband of the deceased. The inspector has left town to investigate. Supreme Court. Wellington, This Day. W. M. McLennan for false pretences was sentenced to six months’ probation. The case against the Healys for alleged cruelty to a child was postponed again till next session awaiting evidence of the child’s ago from England. Mere Fires. G isiioiiNE, This Day. Two cottages in main street were burned at midnight. A strong breeze was blowing and tlie brigade had to work bard to prevent the fire spreading. Two hours later another house wa3 destroyed. The insurances amount to £550.
Death of the Rev J. Dellow. Christchurch, This Day. The Rev. J. Dellow, Wesleyan Minister, Woodend, who was seized with an acute attack of inflammation on Tuesday, died yesterday, aged 46. lie leaves five children, and was a very popular man. Pigeon Race. Christchurch, This Day. A pigeon race took place from Invercargill on Saturday. Nineteen birds wore sent, but only seven turned up. They bad to face a strong northerly wind. The winner, Phillip Lenpert, did tho distance in 10 hours 51 minutes, a velocity of 091 yards per minute. A Boy Drowned. Invercargill, This Day. James Waddall, aged 14, son of a member of flic Harbor Board, fell off tho wharf and was drowned. He was a good swimmer, but is supposed to have been injured in tho fall.
