THE TROUBLE IN INDIA.
A Great Army on the Frontier. By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Per Press Association. Calcutta, October 5. The Mobmands jeeringly express disappointment that Colonel Jeffreys forces did not fight on Monday, and they adversely criticise the Guides’ Corps and artillery force. Troops to the number of 65,000, the flower of the British and native armies, are now collected on the north-western frontier. The first division of LieutenantColonel Sir William Lockhart’s column will be under the command of Lieutenant - Colonel W. J. Symons, and the second division under Colonel Lugg.
The Ameer’s Loyalty to
Britain. Calcutta, October 6. The Ameer of Afghanistan, replying to a deputation of tribesmen who applied to him for assistance against the British, strongly condemned the taking of allowances while raising a causeless rebellion, and quoted from the Koran showing the sacredness of duty to fulfil promises. Great Britain, he said, had not departed from her agreement, and he would never swerve from the alliance made with her.
The Ameer clearly explains to his own subjects that the British policy is not to take Afghanistan, and he refers to the folly of Share Ali and Yakoub Khan in their intrigues with Russia in years past. He justifies the alliance with Great Britain on the ground that it secures the defence of Afghanistan.
