Gallant Sikhs.
Received Sept. 19, 5.5 p.m. Calcutta, September 18. After driving the Mohmands to the Hills Colonel Jeffreys retired, being outnumbered by the enemy. The Mohmands subsequently repelled a cavalry charge and surrounded a company of the Sikh guides, l*it the cavalry rallied and swept the enemy back, destroying their towers. Another campany of Sikhs were hard pressed and short of ammunition when the forces and corps gallantly relieved them. The enemy then closely pursued the retiring column. During the darkness Jeffreys, with a company of guides became separated from the main column and found themselves in peril until the cavalry came to their succour at daybreak. Lieutenants Hughes and Crawford w ere killed, three officers were severely wounded, and four, including Jeffreys, slightly. Thirty-four of the relieved ranks and file were killed, including eleven English ami 21 Sikhs. The relieving force lost 98 wounded, including I t English and 42 Sikhs.
