WOODYILLE NOTES.

(From our own Correspondent). I have been wondering verymuch whether your office smelt at all sulphurous on Wednesday week. Your papers failed to arrive per coach (as is too often the occurrence i and the awful d uttered by a well-known footballer over bis disappointment filled me with wonder —wonder as to whether gnlpbur travelled far and fast. If so, you must feel shrivelled. Perhaps that accounts for the poor report of the Licensing meeting published by you. 1 hoar it was the most amusing and interesting one held for years. Member Hughes and Constable Bowden provided most of the fun. The Hall Special Settlement has bad a visit from a real live member ! He was alive when he got there, but extra well alive when he got home again. Accompanied by Mr Motley Mr O’Meara was rowed over the Manawatu in a boat when the river was rather high ; in fact, it was impassable at the fords. That part safely negotiated he commenced to ; climb and scramble, eventually reaching Mr Matheson's residence in a very bespattered and hungry condition. He was entertained in a right welcome style and speaks highly of the settlers in that locality. Mr O'Meara believes in going over bad roads and visiting out-of-the-way places so that, to a certain extent, he can realise what these unfortunate settlers have to endure. A track is now being formed to allow the settlers in the Hall Special Settlement to have access to their sections from Woodville. Interest has run very high to-day over the Borough elections for the return of three Councillors. Five were nominated : Messrs Hall, McKibbia, Stackpoole, Milne and Troup. The return of Messrs Troupe and Stackpoole was expected, but instead of Mr McKibbin Mr Hall was certainly expected to be placed. The Nos. were, I believe, Stackpoole 102, Troupe 94, McKibbin 62, Milne 63, and Hall 43.

The footballers' annual social and dance took place last night and was, of course, a great success. Eleven of our Fire Brigade members accepted Captain Kemsley's invitation and went down to welcome the Premier. The fire-bell rang out an alarm today, and happening to be in town, I fancied there must be a big fiare-up. It turned out to be a chimney in Mr Cox's residence which belched forth in fiery tongue the fact that it needed cleaning. Some boys had a gay old time of it, and not satisfied with the first long ring, went at it • second time. A very pleasing ceremony toolplace in the Wesleyan Methodist Church last week. Miss Moore, the organist, had provided one of her usual excellent concerts, and during an interval, she was presented by Mr Perryman, on behalf of the Church and choir, with a handsome gold watch suitably inscribed. The matter had been kept a close secret, and Miss Moore was taken completely by surprise. Mr Lawrence, the choirmaster, responded on her behalf. A second presentation was made to Mr Lawrence himself, consisting of a handsome ebony baton, heavily mounted m silver and bearing a very nice inscription. Both presentations were really deserved, as both Miss Moore and Mr Lawrence spare neither pains nor tune over the work of the choir. lam j glad to say that the result is very gratifying to those who have had an opportunity of listening to the singing at the Methodist services. A fancy dress bail in aid of the Library funds takes place to-morrow night at Kumeroa, when several new and original costumes will no doubt appear. A coach under Mr Somerville’s charge goes out to take visitors from Woodville.
