HOUSE-WARMING AT CLUB HOTEL.
On Wednesday evening, in response to the invitation of Mr and Mrs Seymour, there was a large gathering in the fine new diningroom of the Cluh HoUl. The assembly was a very representative one, being drawn from every pari of the district. Mr A. Bcese occupied ihe chair, and Mr A. Walker tho vice-chair. Apologies for inability to bo present were received from Messrs J. O'Meara, M.11.K., and 0 Crewe. The tables were loaded with a variety of tempting comestibles ; and the spread, for quality, quantity, and attractiveness, could not have been excelled.
After the usual preliminary toasts, the chairman proposed “ Our Host and Hostess,” and referred in terms of high commendation to the rank to which they had elevated the Cluh Hot 1. It was now, they must admit, equal to any in the province, and the attention was undeniable.
Mr Seymour, in responding, said he was confident the future of the place would justify the expenditure that had been incurred in the enlargement of the hotel. He was pleased to see so many friends around him on the occasion of this •• housewarming.” If any had failed to receive invitations he must ask them to consider it as the result of inadvertence and not of design. Some may have been over looked, but if so the omission was purely accidental.
Then followed other toasts as follow :—“ Prosperity to Palnatua," proposed by Mr Baillie and responded to by Messrs R. Smith and C. Avery ; “Tho Contractors,” proposed by Mr Seymour, responded to by Messrs Levin (painting, etc.), J. C. Taylor (electric hells and hot water fittings.. and 11. W. Godfrey; “Our Industries,” propos-d by Mr A. W. Sedcole, resDonded to by Messrs J. Dawson, A. McFarlane and G. Avery ; “ The Ladies,” proposed by Mr G. 11. Smith, responded to by Mr J. Henderson ; “ The Founderof Pahiatua,” proposed by the chairman and re-ponded to hv Messrs C. and G. Avery and A. W. Sedcole. In proposing this toast the chairman referred to the splendid work done in the formation of the township by Mr W. W. MeCurdle, whose name was coupled with the toast, aud on whose behalf Mr A. W. Sedcole returned thanks. “ The Press,” proposed by Mr Wilson and responded to by Mr Baillie.
During the evening songs were given by Messrs McKinDon :L, Godfrey. Pillans, Morris, Starkey, T. Brown, Mowat and others.
“ Auld Lang Syne ” and tbree-times-three cheers for the host and hostess brought to a close an enjoyable gathering.
