A Crisis in New South Wales. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.—COPYRIGHT.— PER PRESS ASSOCIATION. Received 10.20 a.m. Sydney, This Day. A crisis in the Commonwealth Bill was reached in tho Legislative Council last night oil the first financial clause providing that the dominion government should huve the exclusive power to levy customs and excise duties. Mr MucLaurin moved that this ho struck out.
Despite Mr Barton’s strong protestations that federation would he incomplete without such a provision, and it was necessary to bring about fni trado between the colonies, tho amendment was carried. Mr Barton immediately intimated that lie would aha ulon the control of tho Bill.
Mr I). O’Connor supported the stand taken by Mr Barton and they both left the Chamber, the VicoPresident taking charge of the remaining clauses of the bill. After the main financial ones were struck off the Council adopted the preamble, which was amended by the insertion of the words acknowledging Almighty God as the Supreme Ruler of the universe. The incident created considerable excitement, The bill has now been forwarded to the Legislative Assembly.
