THE PROPOSAL OF THE CATHOLICS.
A Loyal Church. The following is the circular letter issued to the Catholic clergy regarding the Queen’s Jubilee celebration : 11 Dear Rev. Father.—ln common with the Home countries we shall be called on to take part in the festivities that, on the 20th June next, shall mark the 60th anniversary of the advent to the throne of Her Most Gracious Majesty Queen Victoria. That long reign has been fraught with many and lasting blessings from Almighty God, and unto all time shall stand out as tlie most eventful and illustrious in history. Within that period will he traced the rise and growtli and onward march of tlie Church in this young country. For these great blessings we are not un- ! grateful, nor will we fail as in duty , bound to return humble and fervent thanks to tlie Most High for making us sharers in his liberal gifts. It is fitting then that we should in true Catholic ami Christian spirit, give thanks to God for the many favours showered on the Church and on this vigorous young country during tlie long reign of Her Most Gracious Majesty, and that we should join with our fellow colonists in praying Almighty God to spare Iler Majesty yet many years to rule over her vast dominions. We shall pray also that the spirit of enlightened freedomn.ay always continue toguide those to whom, under Providence, tlie destinies of the i'hnpire, and especially the destinies of this the land of our adoption, may lie entrusted. Therefore, by direction of his Grace the Archbishop, who is now in Australia on his way to the Archdiocese, 1 hereby direct that throughout the Archdiocese, on the 20th June, a solemn “ Te Dtuin ” be chanted in every church where a pi test resides, ami that reference be made to Ilia great occasion of the •J übilec Celebrations.”
