From our own correspondents. Ballance. The first meeting of members of the Ballance Mutual Improvement Society was held in the hall on Tuesday night last. Mr Anderson, President, in his opening remarks, congratulated the Society upon the large attendance of members, which in Ins opinion augured well for the success of the Society, and he hoped that the keen interest shown would not flag, and that every member would endeavor to induce others to join. He regretted that the opening night should have to be a quiet and formal one as another function had been fixed for the following night, and it was decided not to clash in any way. The rules of the Society and syllabus were then discussed pretty freely, and adopted. Recitations were given by Miss Cornelius, Messrs Anderson and Shuto and a song by Mr Strong. It was decided, that as next Tuesday was Jubilee day, there would be no meeting. 1 hear one of our pioneer settlers, Mr James Sinclair, lias sold out his farm at Mangahao, a Mr Wilson from Masterton being the purchaser. Some twelve months ago Mr Sinclair took up a large piece of land in the Opunake district, and probably it is Mr Sinclair’s intention to move that way. We hope not, as this district will be loosing a good settler. Mr Eaton, another of the early settlers, who sold his farm some nine months ago to the late deceased Mr Henry Barton, has bought Messrs M-Kenny and Martin's farm of 200 odd acres, but it is not certain whether Sir Eaton intends leaving Ballance or not. Quito a number of settlers are very much disappointed at there being no special train excursion trips. This is as usual. The department thinks the country coons don't want to go anywhere.
