The Celebrations in Wellington.
Wellington, Last Night. A rehearsal of some of the Decora- j lieign illuminations was made on Saturday night and it was found they worked very satisfactorily. The celebrations practically began this morning when the city volunteers and permanent forces mustered strongly and attended service at St. Peter’s Church. There was a very large congregation, including the administrator of the Government. The men from the warship Plyades attended service at the Pro-Cathedral where there was also a very large congregation. The warship herself was gaily decorated with bunting. Special thanksgiving services were held in all the churches. This afternoon a long procession comprising temperance bodies, Oddfellows. Protestant Alliance, Druids, Foresters and Hibernian societies proceeded from the Government offices to the opera house, where short and appropriate addresses were delivered by the Hovs. Glasson, Dulluston and Baumber. His Worship the Mayor presided. The *■ fding was packed and the proc of the collection are to be dovo. A to the Hawke’s Bay relief fund and Victoria Operating Theatre fund, Wellington. Despite the fact that the weather was showery all day the streets were thronged with eager spectators. Monday will to a large extent be observed as a holiday, though some of the business houses announce that they will remain open. In the evening some of the places will be illuminated at night, but Tuesday is regarded as record day. The newspapers suspend publication. chief attraction is a procession to the lias. • Reserve, beginning at 10 in the morning, in. which all civil and local bodies will take part, as well as friendly and other societies. On reaching the Basin Reserve the Administrator of the Government will deliver an address and hoist the lioyal standard, and a Royal Salute will be fired. Altn from the warship Plyades will give a military display, and the afternoon will be devoted to sports for the children. Kach of the latter receive a bronze medal especially struck for the record reign. In the evening the Government house and Government offices and most of the chief business houses will be brilliantly illuminated, while on the bills bonfires will be lit, and from the harbor there will be a grund j.yrotecbnical display. The weather is clearing to-night, und promises to be tine.
